XLSX to TXT as delimited or fixed width text
Upload the XLSX file, choose delimited or fixed width layout, set the encoding, then convert. You download a plain text file that legacy import systems can read.

Bank payment files, payroll uploads and older ERP imports often want a plain text file in a precise layout rather than CSV. XlsConverter exports an Excel sheet as TXT with your choice of delimiter or fixed column widths, encoding and line endings.
For tab separated data with a standard layout, XLSX to TSV is simpler, and older workbooks follow XLS to TXT.
How to convert XLSX to TXT in three steps
- 1Upload the XLSX workbook.
- 2Choose delimited or fixed width, column widths, encoding and line endings.
- 3Convert and download the .txt file.
Fixed width files fail on a single extra character
In a fixed width file, every field starts at an exact position. One value that is longer than its column shifts the rest of the line and the import rejects the whole row, or worse, reads the wrong amount. The converter can truncate long values or stop with a clear report listing the rows that exceed their width.
Amounts usually need a specific format: no thousands separator, a fixed number of decimals, sometimes no decimal point at all (1234.50 written as 000000123450). Set the number format per column so the output matches the specification of the receiving bank or system.
Many legacy importers only accept ASCII or a Windows code page, so accented characters must be transliterated rather than written as UTF-8. If the receiving system accepts a modern format, XLSX to CSV is easier to maintain, and XLSX to Markdown gives readable text tables for documentation.
XLSX to TXT questions
How do I convert an Excel file to a TXT file?
Upload the sheet, pick delimited or fixed width and the encoding, then convert. You get a plain text file in that layout.
Can I create a fixed width text file from Excel?
Yes. Set a width for each column and choose padding rules, and the converter aligns every field.
What encoding should a TXT file for a bank use?
Follow the bank specification. Many ask for ASCII or a Windows code page, which you can select.
What happens if a value is too long for its column?
You choose to truncate it or to get a report of the rows that do not fit.
Is there a demo for XLSX to TXT?
Yes, a one-time demo converts up to 100 rows. Full files need a paid plan, starting at 24 USD per month billed yearly.
