Tabs and line breaks hidden inside cells
TSV has no universal escaping rule. A cell containing a tab or a line break, often pasted from an email or a web form, will shift columns or split a row in two when the file is read back. The converter replaces embedded tabs with spaces and embedded line breaks with a single space by default, and you can switch to quoted fields if your loader understands them.
Formatted values are the second trap. A cell that shows 12.5% stores 0.125, and a date that shows 10/07/2026 stores a serial number. Choose values as displayed for human readable output or raw values for machine processing, and be consistent across runs.
PostgreSQL COPY, MySQL LOAD DATA and most command line tools read TSV directly, which makes it a good bridge into a database. If you would rather skip the loader, XLSX to SQL writes the INSERT statements for you, and TSV to XLSX handles the return trip.

How do I save an Excel file as tab delimited text?
Excel offers Text (Tab delimited) in Save As, which uses a legacy encoding. Converting with XlsConverter gives UTF-8 output and control over line endings.
Is TSV better than CSV for data with commas?
Usually yes. Commas inside values need no quoting in TSV, so files are simpler to parse.
What happens to tabs inside cells?
