XlsConverter

XLSX to CSV conversion for large Excel workbooks

Upload the .xlsx workbook, choose which sheet to export and the delimiter, then convert and download. Each sheet becomes a plain text CSV with values exactly as Excel displays them.

XLSX is the Open XML workbook Excel has used since 2007: a ZIP package of XML parts with shared strings, styles and sheets. It holds up to 1,048,576 rows, which is far more than Excel opens comfortably on an average laptop. Exporting it to CSV is the usual step before loading data into a warehouse, a CRM or a script.

XlsConverter streams the sheet XML instead of loading the whole workbook into memory, so very large files convert reliably. Working with the older binary format instead? Use XLS to CSV. Need tabs for a database bulk loader? Try XLSX to TSV.

How to convert XLSX to CSV in three steps

  1. 1Upload the .xlsx file or paste a share link.
  2. 2Select the sheet, delimiter, encoding and how numbers and dates are written.
  3. 3Convert and download the CSV file or a ZIP of all sheets.

Formatted values versus stored values in XLSX cells

An XLSX cell stores a raw value and a separate number format. A price shown as $1,250.00 is stored as 1250, a percentage shown as 12% is stored as 0.12, and an order number shown as 000482 may be stored as 482 with a custom format of six zeros. Exporting the raw value breaks leading zeros and percentages, exporting the formatted value can add currency symbols your importer rejects. XlsConverter lets you choose per job, and keeps leading zeros by default.

Shared strings are another trap. Text in XLSX lives in a separate table that each cell points to, and rich text runs (part bold, part italic) are split into fragments. We join the fragments back into one clean string and strip line breaks inside cells if you ask, which stops a single address field from breaking one record into three CSV lines.

Hidden rows, hidden columns and filtered views are still part of the data. By default they are exported, because a CSV import should not silently drop records, but you can choose to skip hidden rows. If the target is an API rather than a file, XLSX to JSON keeps numbers as numbers, and XLSX to SQL writes typed columns straight into a database dump.

XLSX to CSV questions

How do I convert XLSX to CSV and keep leading zeros?

Export the formatted value instead of the raw number. XlsConverter does this by default, so codes like 000482 stay intact in the CSV.

What is the difference between CSV UTF-8 and plain CSV in Excel?

Plain CSV uses your system code page, CSV UTF-8 stores every character as Unicode and starts with a byte order mark. UTF-8 is the safe choice for anything outside your own machine.

Can I convert an XLSX file larger than Excel can open?

Yes. The workbook is read as a stream, so files up to your plan limit (100 MB on Pro, up to 1 GB on API) convert without loading everything at once.

How do I export every sheet of an XLSX workbook to CSV?

Select all sheets before converting. You receive a ZIP with one CSV per sheet, named after each tab.

Can I try XLSX to CSV conversion before subscribing?

Yes, with a one-time demo of up to 100 rows, viewed in the browser and downloadable after signup. Converting whole files requires a plan, from 24 USD per month billed yearly.
