Batch convert Excel to CSV and bulk convert XLSX files

Drop a whole folder of XLSX, XLS or ODS workbooks into one batch, choose CSV, set the delimiter, encoding and sheet once, and download a single ZIP with one CSV per file. Try one file free below, then batches of 50 to 500 files run on a paid plan.

Short answer

To batch convert Excel to CSV without scripts, upload all the workbooks to XlsConverter in one batch, choose CSV and your settings once, and download a ZIP. Pro converts 50 files per batch and Business 500 files per batch, both without Excel installed and without PowerShell or Python.

Excel saves one sheet of one workbook as CSV at a time. That is fine for a single export and painful for 80 vendor files, 12 monthly reports or a migration folder full of old XLS files. Doing it by hand means opening every file, clicking Save As, picking the right CSV flavor, confirming the warning about features that will be lost and closing the file, then doing it again. Somewhere around file 30, someone picks CSV (Macintosh) instead of CSV UTF-8, and the import fails a week later.

A batch run applies exactly the same settings to every file, so the output is consistent by design. Each workbook becomes a CSV named after the source file, and the whole set downloads as one ZIP. If you only need one file with more options, use XLSX to CSV. For legacy Excel 97 to 2003 files, the single file page is XLS to CSV.

How to convert Excel to CSV in bulk in three steps

  1. 1Open the batch converter in your account and drop up to 50 files on Pro or up to 500 files on Business (XLSX, XLS, XLSM, XLSB, ODS or CSV).
  2. 2Choose CSV, then set the delimiter, encoding, header row, date format and which sheet to export. The settings apply to every file in the batch.
  3. 3Convert and download one ZIP with a CSV for each workbook. Duplicate file names get a number suffix, so nothing is overwritten.

Why bulk converting Excel files by hand goes wrong

Most batch problems are not about speed. They are about drift. When 40 files are exported one by one, a few end up with a different delimiter, a different encoding or a different sheet, and the downstream import treats them differently. A single batch run removes that drift because the settings are chosen once.

Dates are the second trap. Excel stores dates as serial numbers and shows them in the format of the computer that opened the file, so two people exporting the same workbook can produce 03/04/2026 and 2026-03-04. In a batch, every date column is written in the pattern you pick, and long account numbers, UPC codes and ZIP codes with leading zeros stay as typed instead of turning into 1.23E+11.

The third trap is the sheet. Save As CSV exports only the active sheet, which is whatever tab was open when the file was last saved. In a batch you name the sheet to export or export every sheet, so the result does not depend on how each file was left. To split one workbook into one CSV per tab, see Split Excel sheets, and to stack tabs into one table use Merge Excel sheets.

Who needs to convert multiple Excel files to CSV at once

Operations and purchasing teams get price lists and stock reports from dozens of suppliers, each as an Excel attachment, and the ERP only imports CSV. Finance teams pull monthly or per-entity workbooks together at close and load them into a reporting database. Data and migration teams inherit a shared drive with years of XLS files that have to land in a warehouse or a new SaaS tool.

In each case the job repeats. If the same files arrive every week, a pipeline is a better fit than a manual batch: it picks up the workbooks from an email inbox, S3, Google Drive or Dropbox on a schedule and delivers the CSV files for you. See scheduled pipelines for how that works, or call the conversion API from your own code.

Excel to CSV in bulk questions

How do I convert multiple Excel files to CSV at once?

Upload all of the workbooks to one batch in XlsConverter, choose CSV, set the delimiter, encoding and sheet once, and convert. You download a single ZIP with one CSV per workbook. Pro converts up to 50 files per batch and Business up to 500, without Excel installed.

How do I convert all Excel files in a folder to CSV?

Select every file in the folder and drag them into the batch converter in one go, then pick CSV and convert. To run this automatically whenever files land in a folder, connect Google Drive, Dropbox or S3 to a pipeline that converts each new workbook on a schedule.

Does saving Excel as CSV convert all sheets?

No. Excel saves only the active sheet when you choose CSV. In a batch you can export a named sheet from every file or export every sheet as its own CSV, so the output does not depend on which tab was open when each workbook was saved.

Can I batch convert XLS files to CSV without Excel?

Yes. The batch converter reads XLS, XLSX, XLSM, XLSB and ODS files directly, so no copy of Excel, VBA macro or PowerShell script is needed. That also makes it work from a Mac, a Chromebook or a locked down work laptop.

How much does it cost to bulk convert Excel to CSV?

Pro is 49 USD per month, or 24 USD per month billed yearly, with batches of 50 files and 2,000 conversions per billing period. Business is 149 USD per month with batches of 500 files and scheduled pipelines. One file can be tested first with a one-time demo of up to 100 rows.

Will leading zeros and dates survive a bulk conversion?

Yes. Values are written as stored in the workbook, so IDs and ZIP codes keep their leading zeros, and every date column is written in the single pattern you choose, for example YYYY-MM-DD, across all files in the batch.
