Pipes, line breaks and other characters that break Markdown tables
A pipe character inside a cell ends the column in Markdown, so a value like "A | B" shifts every following cell. The converter escapes pipes as \| and replaces line breaks inside cells with a br tag, which GitHub and most renderers accept.
Markdown tables have no merged cells, no colors and no column widths. Merged ranges are unmerged and the value is placed in the first cell, so check large merged headers before publishing. Leading and trailing spaces are trimmed because renderers ignore them anyway.
Very wide tables are hard to read in rendered docs. Consider exporting only the columns you need, or publish the full data as a downloadable file next to the summary table. For machine readable docs, a companion XLSX to JSON file is common, and CSV to JSON covers text sources.
