ODS to XLSX with formulas and formatting kept
Upload the ODS file, keep the option to preserve formulas and styles, then convert. You download an XLSX workbook with every sheet, ready to open in Excel or Google Sheets.

ODS is the native format of OpenDocument office suites, and it opens in Excel, but not always well. Conditional formats shift, some functions show errors and dates can lose their format. XlsConverter rewrites the file as a proper XLSX workbook so colleagues on Excel get a clean file.
Every sheet is carried over in its original order. To go back to OpenDocument later, use XLSX to ODS, and for a flat data export try ODS to CSV.
How to convert ODS to XLSX in three steps
- 1Upload the .ods spreadsheet.
- 2Choose whether to keep formulas and styles or write values only.
- 3Convert and download the .xlsx workbook.
Formula syntax differs between ODS and Excel
ODS stores formulas in OpenFormula syntax, with references written like [.A1] and sheet names prefixed by a dollar sign and a dot. Excel uses plain A1 and separates the sheet name from the cell with an exclamation mark. The converter rewrites references and function names so formulas recalculate in Excel instead of showing #NAME? errors.
A few functions have no direct Excel equivalent, and some behave differently with empty cells or text. When a formula cannot be translated safely, the cell keeps its last calculated value so the numbers you saw in the ODS file are exactly what Excel shows.
Size limits also differ. ODS files from older suites may cap rows lower than XLSX, while XLSX allows 1,048,576 rows and 16,384 columns, so nothing gets cut on the way in. If the recipient still uses legacy Excel, a second step with XLSX to XLS is possible, and Mac users can compare with Numbers to Excel.
ODS to XLSX questions
Can Excel open ODS files directly?
Excel can open many ODS files, but complex formulas, charts and styles may not survive. Converting to XLSX first gives a cleaner, predictable result.
Are formulas kept when converting ODS to XLSX?
Yes. Formulas are translated to Excel syntax, and any that cannot be translated keep their calculated value.
Will all sheets be converted?
By default every sheet is converted in order, with its name preserved. You can also export a single sheet.
What is the difference between ODS and XLSX?
Both are zipped XML formats. ODS follows the OpenDocument standard, XLSX follows Office Open XML used by Excel.
