Remove empty columns in Excel and trim stray spaces
Upload the XLSX workbook, keep remove empty columns and trim spaces enabled, then convert. The new workbook contains only columns with data and no stray spaces around values.

Exports from CRMs, ERPs and survey tools love empty columns: fields nobody uses, spacer columns left for layout, and a long tail of blanks to the right of the data. Importers then report unexpected columns, and wide sheets become hard to read. Deleting them one by one in Excel is tedious when there are forty.
Upload the file and get a tidy workbook back with empty columns removed and spaces trimmed. To also drop repeated rows, run Remove duplicates in Excel, and to send the result to a system that reads text, export with XLSX to CSV.
How to convert Remove empty columns in Excel in three steps
- 1Upload the .xlsx file.
- 2Keep remove empty columns and trim spaces on, and confirm the header row.
- 3Convert and download the cleaned workbook.
When a column looks empty but is not
A column is removed only when none of its data cells has a value. A single stray space or an apostrophe typed into one cell is enough to keep it in Excel, which is why trimming runs together with this cleanup: once spaces are stripped, a column that only contained spaces is genuinely empty and goes away.
Columns with a header but no data are removed too, because for an import they carry nothing but a name. If a downstream system requires a fixed set of columns even when they are empty, do not use this cleanup for that file, or add the required columns back in the template you import into.
Trimming also fixes a quiet source of errors in lookups. A product code with a trailing space never matches the same code in another table, and VLOOKUP or XLOOKUP returns not found. Values in the cleaned workbook are written as values; formulas become their results when cleanup runs. For wide reports that end up on paper, follow up with XLSX to PDF.
Remove empty columns in Excel questions
How do I delete all empty columns in Excel at once?
Upload the workbook with remove empty columns enabled and download the result. Every column without data is removed in one step.
Are columns with only a header removed?
Yes. A column with a name but no values in any data row counts as empty.
Why did a column that looks empty stay?
One of its cells holds a value, often a character that is hard to see. Trim removes spaces; other characters have to be cleared in the sheet.
Does trimming change the values in my cells?
It only removes leading and trailing spaces. Spaces between words stay as they are.
Can I try this cleanup before subscribing?
