Google Sheets to Excel with every tab in one workbook

Clients, auditors and older internal tools often want a real Excel file rather than a link. Downloading by hand works once, but it has to be repeated every time the sheet changes, and the person doing it needs access to the Google account that owns the file.

What carries over from Google Sheets into an Excel workbook

Values, text and the structure of each tab carry over reliably. Functions that only exist in Google Sheets, such as GOOGLEFINANCE, IMPORTRANGE, IMAGE or QUERY, have no Excel equivalent, so the converter writes their calculated results as values. The workbook then opens without the error cells that a formula copy would produce on a computer that has no connection to Google.

Locale settings can surprise you. A spreadsheet set to a European locale stores 3,5 as three and a half, and dates as day.month.year. Excel in the United States reads those as text if they arrive as text. Values are written as real numbers and real dates in the XLSX, so the recipient sees them formatted by their own Excel settings, not by the locale of the original sheet.
