XlsConverter

Excel to SQLite script with typed columns

Upload the Excel file, choose SQLite as the dialect, set the table name and convert. Run the downloaded script with the sqlite3 shell or any SQLite client to create and fill the table.

SQLite is the easiest way to query a spreadsheet with real SQL, ship data inside an app or hand a single file database to an analyst. XlsConverter writes a SQLite flavored script from any Excel sheet, so you skip the CSV import step and its type guessing.

The script follows SQLite conventions rather than generic SQL. For server databases use Excel to MySQL or Excel to PostgreSQL instead.

How to convert Excel to SQLite in three steps

  1. 1Upload the XLSX or XLS workbook.
  2. 2Select the sheet, choose the SQLite dialect and name the table.
  3. 3Convert, download the .sql file and run it with sqlite3 or your client.

SQLite has no date type, so plan for it

SQLite stores dates as TEXT, REAL or INTEGER, and its date functions only understand ISO 8601 strings, Julian day numbers or Unix time. The converter writes ISO text such as 2026-10-07 14:30:00, which keeps sorting correct and lets you call date() and strftime() directly.

Booleans are another quiet difference. SQLite has no BOOLEAN storage, so TRUE and FALSE cells become 1 and 0. Excel percentages become REAL values (0.15, not 15%), and currency formatting is dropped in favor of the plain number, which is what you want for arithmetic.

Speed depends on transactions. Without a wrapping transaction SQLite commits every INSERT separately, which is painfully slow on large sheets. The script wraps everything in one transaction by default. If you only need a quick look at the data, XLSX to CSV plus the sqlite3 import command also works, and the general XLSX to SQL page explains the inference rules.

Excel to SQLite questions

How do I convert an Excel spreadsheet to a SQLite database?

Convert the sheet to a SQLite SQL script, then run it with the sqlite3 shell using .read file.sql. The script creates the table and inserts every row.

Does SQLite keep Excel date formats?

SQLite has no date type, so dates are stored as ISO 8601 text, which SQLite date functions read natively.

Can I convert every sheet into its own SQLite table?

Yes. Enable one table per sheet and each worksheet gets its own CREATE TABLE and INSERT block in the same script.

Why is my SQLite import so slow?

Each INSERT outside a transaction is committed on its own. The converter wraps the script in a single transaction to avoid that.

Can I test Excel to SQLite on my own file first?

We offer a one-time demo of up to 100 rows. Full workbooks need a paid plan, starting at 24 USD per month billed yearly.
