Convertio Alternative for Excel and CSV Conversion in Bulk

The best Convertio alternative for Excel and CSV work is a converter built only for spreadsheets. Convertio is cheaper, from 11.99 USD per month, and handles more than 200 formats, but XlsConverter adds sheet, delimiter, encoding and date controls, batches of 50 to 500 workbooks with one shared setup and scheduled pipelines, on flat plans from 24 USD per month billed yearly.

Convertio is one of the most used online file converters, and for good reason. It runs in the browser, takes almost any file and its paid plans cost less than a team lunch. If you are searching for an alternative, the usual trigger is not price. It is that your conversions are spreadsheets, there are a lot of them, and the result has to load cleanly into an ERP, an accounting package, a database or a customer portal.

This comparison is written for operations, finance and data people with that job. It covers what Convertio does well, where spreadsheet work needs more control, how the two pricing models compare at real volumes, and how to move a recurring Excel task without breaking the import that depends on it.

When Convertio is the right tool

Stay with Convertio if spreadsheets are a small part of what you convert. Its site lists more than 200 output formats across documents, images, audio, video, ebooks and archives, so one subscription covers a marketing team's video files and an office manager's PDFs alike. Its pricing page lists three self-serve plans: Lite at 11.99 USD per month with 1,000 conversion credits and files up to 1 GB, Basic at 22.99 USD with 3,000 credits and 3 GB, and Pro at 44.99 USD with 10,000 credits and 10 GB. Annual billing lowers those to 6.99, 13.99 and 25.99 USD per month. Custom plans start at 54 USD.

It is also fine for the occasional workbook. If you turn five XLSX files into PDF once a quarter, a specialist tool is more than you need.

Where Excel and CSV work needs more than a general converter

A general converter answers one question: what format do you want? A spreadsheet that feeds another system raises several more, and the answers have to be identical every time the job runs.

  • Which sheet? A workbook with a tab per month or per region needs one named sheet, every sheet as its own CSV, or all tabs stacked into one table.
  • Which delimiter and encoding? Comma for most US imports, tab or pipe for some warehouse systems, UTF-8 with a byte order mark so Excel on Windows shows accented vendor names correctly.
  • Which date pattern? Excel stores dates as serial numbers. The CSV should carry one fixed pattern such as YYYY-MM-DD, whatever the regional settings of the source file were.
  • Do IDs survive? ZIP codes, SKUs, UPCs and account numbers have to keep leading zeros and must not turn into 1.23E+11.
  • What happens with 80 files? The same choices have to apply to every file, and the results have to land somewhere without a person downloading them one at a time.

Convertio's XLSX to CSV page describes a simple upload and download flow and says each sheet of a multi-sheet workbook is processed individually. It does not list delimiter, encoding or date pattern settings. That is a reasonable design for a tool that serves 200 formats, and it is the gap a spreadsheet converter fills. On XlsConverter those settings sit on every converter page, for example XLSX to CSV, and carry over unchanged into batches, pipelines and the API.

Convertio pricing compared with XlsConverter

Convertio sells conversion credits and file size. XlsConverter sells flat spreadsheet plans: Pro is 49 USD per month, or 24 USD per month billed yearly, with 2,000 conversions per billing period, files up to 100 MB and batches of 50 files. Business is 149 USD per month, or 74 USD billed yearly, with 10,000 conversions, 500 MB files, batches of 500 and up to 20 scheduled pipelines. The API plan at 399 USD per month adds REST access and signed webhooks. Full limits are on the pricing page.

Convertio is the cheaper product and handles far larger files on its entry plan. XlsConverter costs more and covers fewer formats, and goes deeper on the one category. The honest way to choose is to count the hours someone spends re-saving CSV files with the right settings or repairing a failed import. At 30 minutes a week for an analyst, that time costs more than the gap between the two subscriptions.

Two spreadsheet jobs priced out

Take a purchasing team that receives 80 supplier price lists a month as Excel attachments and loads them into an ERP. On a credit plan the conversion itself is cheap. The cost sits in the manual steps around it: saving each attachment, uploading, checking that the right tab came out, fixing dates, renaming files. With the batch Excel to CSV converter, all 80 files run with one saved setup and come back as one ZIP. On Business, a pipeline watches the purchasing inbox and delivers each CSV to the ERP's SFTP folder, as described on the automatic Excel to CSV page, so the monthly job disappears.

Now take a bookkeeping firm that exports client ledgers to CSV for accounting software. Here the format on the receiving end is strict. A wrong date pattern or a stripped leading zero in an account number means a rejected import or, worse, an accepted one with wrong data. Fixed settings matter more than price in that workflow. If the CSV is headed for QuickBooks and the bank feed is not an option, you can also turn the CSV into a QBO file that imports like a downloaded bank statement.

Which one should you pick

Pick Convertio if you convert video, audio, images and documents as well as spreadsheets, if single files above 100 MB are common, or if you convert a few workbooks a month and the output goes to a person, not a system.

Pick a spreadsheet specific alternative if the CSV, JSON, XML or SQL you produce is the input to an import, if you convert dozens of workbooks in one sitting, or if the same files arrive on a schedule and someone converts them by hand. If you are also comparing other general converters, see the Zamzar alternative and CloudConvert alternative comparisons, which cover a file size model and a pay per credit model.

How to move a recurring Excel job off Convertio

  1. Pick three real files from last month, including the one that caused trouble, and run one through the demo on the matching converter page. Check the output against your import template column by column.
  2. Save the settings that worked: sheet, delimiter, encoding, date pattern, plus any column renames or dedupe rules.
  3. Run last month's whole set as a batch and load it into a test copy of the target system. Compare row counts on both sides.
  4. If the files arrive on a schedule, turn the saved settings into a pipeline with the inbox or cloud folder as the source and SFTP, S3 or a webhook as the destination. The automation overview lists every source and destination.
  5. Run both tools side by side for one cycle. Then cancel Convertio or keep its cheapest plan for media and document files.

Most teams finish the first file layout in an afternoon. Keeping a low cost general converter next to a spreadsheet tool is a common end state, and at 6.99 USD per month billed yearly it is an easy one to justify.

Questions about this guide

What is the best Convertio alternative for Excel files?

For spreadsheet work, a converter built only for spreadsheets is the closer fit. XlsConverter converts XLS, XLSX, ODS, CSV, JSON, XML, SQL and PDF with sheet, delimiter, encoding and date controls, batches of 50 to 500 workbooks and scheduled pipelines, on flat plans from 24 USD per month billed yearly.

How much does Convertio cost?

Convertio's pricing page lists Lite at 11.99 USD per month (1,000 credits, 1 GB files), Basic at 22.99 USD (3,000 credits, 3 GB) and Pro at 44.99 USD (10,000 credits, 10 GB). Billed yearly, the same plans are 6.99, 13.99 and 25.99 USD per month. Custom plans start at 54 USD per month.

Can Convertio set the delimiter or encoding when converting Excel to CSV?

Convertio's XLSX to CSV page does not list delimiter, encoding or date pattern settings. It describes an upload and download flow where each sheet is processed individually. If an import needs semicolons, UTF-8 with BOM or one fixed date pattern, use a spreadsheet converter that exposes those options.

Is Convertio safe for business spreadsheets?

Convertio states that uploaded files are deleted right after conversion and converted files within 24 hours. Whether that meets your policy depends on the data. For payroll, customer or financial workbooks, check the vendor's retention, processing region and data processing agreement before uploading.

Is there a Convertio alternative that converts Excel files automatically?

Yes. An XlsConverter pipeline picks up workbooks from an email inbox, S3, Google Drive, Dropbox or a URL, converts them with saved settings and delivers the result to SFTP, S3, a webhook or email, on every new file or on an hourly, daily, weekly or cron schedule. Pipelines are part of the Business plan.
